Why does TS6 use Peer2Peer for video transmissions between multiple participants?

Why is it not assumed that the whole thing is routed via something like a TURN server?
WebRTC is easy to integrate, but making it really secure and performant in group chats is difficult because it requires a system that distributes the whole thing like a mesh network for multiple clients.
Does this future already exist btw. is it already integrated in Selfhosted Server?
For 1 year wait I would have imagined something else, but hey, at least something came.
