Video streaming massively impacts client game performance

Heya!
I set up a server for the bois and we enjoy the massively improved voice latency over… competing solutions.
But I personally have a rather big problem when it comes to video streaming.

I’ve been trying to stream CS2 and it captures and everything, but the game’s frametimes get REALLY bad. Steam still reports well north of 200 fps, but it feels like 60 or less. No such problems with other capture solutions.

I’m on Win11 25H2 (26200), NV 5090 with driver 610.88 and run my display at 1440p/360Hz.
CS2 runs in default DX11 mode, not forcing it to run Vk.

Any tips on how to sidestep this?
Cheers!

EDIT: Actually, running screen capture works without such a massive penalty. Must be an issue with the game capture hook. Hopefully this helps someone else sooner or later :)

I assume Vulkan could work better, but I’ll just sit here and wait for @revide to tell you this is entirely on WebRTC.
Jokes aside, I also noticed these frame pacing issues when capturing the CS2. With the next update you should at least be able to stream the screen and still transmit the game audio.
But let’s hope this geTS addressed soon. :folded_hands:

Sadly forcing the Vulkan renderer diminishes performance on most, if not all setups (until Volvo puts some more elbow grease in) so I doubt it’ll be a good bandaid for most.

Yes indeed, currently we are limited somewhat by what libwebrtc offers in its capturers. However, we are currently exploring custom capturers and true zero-copy paths which should hopefully fully eliminate this issue.
