Yea, unfortunately the old chat system is not compatible with the new one. If i remember they had already mentioned that.
Anyway, there is a public beta chat room with many users. Maybe you will find some of your friend there!

nope, it’s public room.
make sure you include the hashtag (#) before the name when you type it.
