I’d like to suggest (or request help enabling) text-only channels in TeamSpeak 6, where:
Users can communicate via text (no voice).
Message history is saved on the server.
Admins/moderators can manage (edit, delete, or moderate) messages.
This would be useful for announcements, rules, or general chat without requiring voice activity. Does TeamSpeak 6 currently support this? If not, could it be added in a future update?
Yes, Textchannels should be a thing, but there needs to be a way to see the Size of the chat, becuase if Users share memes, it can quickly fill up storage
Been trying out the self-hosted beta. Basic voice functionality seems fine, and the chat functions seem to work well enough. However, I’m curious why server connections must be over voice. There doesn’t seem to be a chat-only channel option AFAICT. I can see a group chat option that seems to indicate it’s specific to a server, but if there’s a way to create a group chat on a particular server I haven’t found it.
TS6 seems to aim to compete with Discord, which acts as a general chat service first, with voice channels added in alongside. You can look at the chat without joining any voice channels. It would be a lot more competitive to at least match that basic functionality and let server connections “step up” to voice channels. I think it would transform TS6 into a viable alternative for groups that want to be able to host their own communities without directly requiring a huge platform.
The service is still in beta, so I’m curious: are there plans to enable functionality along these lines?
I would also like to have that feature implemented. Sometimes I want to see who is online or what friends are doing, and then decide whether I want to join. Would be great if that was possible without having to actually join a voice channel for that.
It would be nice to see a response from the devs regarding this (if they haven’t said something about this already). I really want to make a permanent switch to Teamspeak over Discord and I know many other friends that are willing to do so, but Teamspeak really needs text only channels integrated into a server. I know that group chats already exist, but having server members also be required to be in a group chat (which would also be just a singular channel and the data being stored on Teamspeak’s servers if I am not mistaken) is not ideal.
I am aware that there are more important things right now, but I hope the devs will say something about this.
i would love to have the ability to create a group chat, that everyone in the server can just access without having to join the specific channel.
The biggest benefit would be a central point where admins could post information regarding everyone and having a sort of “hub” for everybody to share things over. I know, that you can just create a group chat in general, but i would love to have this on my own server where i would also have the messages/ files etc. for privacy purposes.
Also the “general” group chat seems to be very slow with sending pictures etc.
Having a central group chat that everyone can access without joining a specific channel would definitely make communication smoother. It’d be great to have one place where admins can post important updates and everyone can share stuff easily.
Found this thread after the news about discord now requiring IDs in all regions as of next month. I setup a test TS server to try and move over but the lack of text channels is by far the most obvious and in my opinion crucial missing feature.
This is a perfect opportunity to steal some marketshare from Discord, since I suspect many people will be looking for alternatives in the coming weeks. A simple text only channel for things like general chat or announcements is literally the only thing stopping me from moving over to teamspeak, and instead considering a matrix instance.
A quick and dirty option is to add a toggle for users to be able to see the chat messages in a channel without joining it, so long as they are connected to the server somewhere, but having an entire type of channel that has this property seems like a more sensible way to do it.
Correct me if I’m wrong here, but I used TS3 like 14 years ago quite regularly and I thought this was a feature back then, I’m sure I remember being able to check other channels while I’m in another one, but like I say it has been 14 years.
I recognise that Teamspeak and Discord are fundamentally different apps with different goals and philosophies, but the user base has a significant overlap, and with the constant degradation of “free” cloud services like discord, to me it seems a no-brainer to add such a simple feature to satisfy those potential users, if being competitive is something teamspeak is looking for.
Yeah, TeamSpeak will never be able to compete if they don’t open up the servers. Currently TS6 is restricted to 32 people, Discord servers frequently have hundreds of people. My own friends only server has more than that. We don’t have enough space to fit everyone in. Then the lack of a general text chat that does not require joining voice is just an outright deal breaker.
The statements of privacy here make no sense, if you want a private chat that only select users can see then that’s a permissions issue not a “you must show you’re looking at the chat” issue, what I read here is some of the stupidest things I’ve read in a while. Sure it’s from 2020 but we’ve needed a competitor for a long while and currently TeamSpeak just isn’t it yet we have the TeamSpeak Twitter account constantly trying to talk about how TeamSpeak is so much better than Discord, constantly attacking Discord posting things like this: https://x.com/teamspeak/status/2020877289446068409
And all sorts of other aggressive anti-Discord speak, yet TeamSpeak lacks the most basic features and logic, judging from these posts and others TeamSpeak has no intention in achieving even half of what needs to be done to actually pull users away from Discord.
That tweet from TeamSpeak can be applied to TeamSpeak as well, twice over even. I always preferred TeamSpeak but it’s too limited for actual general use that’s needed.
For TeamSpeak to compete it
Needs to add text channels that are disconnected from voice channels, they can have both (Discord also has both where a voice channel has it’s own dedicated text channel but it also has non-voice text channels).
Open the slot limit up to be more than 32 (WITHOUT charging extra on a self-hosted server), part of why Discord is so successful is because it can have an entire community built on it alone, a community of hundreds to thousands of people. As a streamer, I need to be able to have large slot counts, the voice requirement+low slot count prevents me from using TeamSpeak over Discord.
Add things like custom emotes/stickers.
There’s more than this, a lot more but especially the first two are absolutely necessary. I know this thread was about expanding the chats but seeing people compare it to Discord in this thread and how aggressive TeamSpeak has been I figure I might as well expand it.
I also agree with the sentiment of the comments above. My group of friends and I are currently mostly active on Discord but after the recent events we have been on the lookout for an alternative. For the way we and many others use these applications, persistent and on the go accessible text and image channels are vital. It might currently not fit into the concept of Teamspeak, but I would ask you to reconsider as it is a feature vital to communities as a whole. The absence of this feature alienates people as an all-in-one solution is desired, due to application switching being a major pain for the end user. Furthermore, convincing anyone to switch is nigh impossible if the alternative lacks these kind of key features. Overall, I think this feature could either be make or break for many people, which would be a large missed opportunity for Teamspeak.
Like others here my friend group is also looking to switch from Discord and separated text channels would be immensely appreciated. If TeamSpeak wants to be competitive at the end of the day we need features like this.
Just thought I’d throw my hat in the ring. Discord refugee . I want to move to another platform but the lack of dedicated text channels is making it a difficult sell to my group….
I agree, with the high influx of people looking to jump ship from Dscord, they’ll want an option to chat between channels without having to leave a call. I get teamspeak is its own application and does things differently, but that might be a good selling point to get more people to join your app than to look elsewhere
privacy should be a serveradmin concern. making the text chat visible outside of the channel should be a setting we can choose per channel. teamspeak already uses priviliges for everything, why not also for the textchat to be visible without joining.
Agree here. Let it be an option for the server admin to decide. Currently I’ve resorted to making the default channel have no speaking rights, so users can automatically connect to server via default channel and text chat in it without having voice active.
