Ability to text in channels without joining them - Add text channels to the server

There should be an option to create text only channels that allow for moderation of messages i.e. “Delete”.

Absolutely agree, its sad we dont have native text chats. Let the owner/admin be responsable for that decision.

This is the only thing holding back lots of groups from making the switch. With the recent changes at discord this could be a huge opportunity for teamspeak.

An opportunity here to have a massive influx of users. Make it hacky for now nobody is asking for perfect. Just give the ability for text chats.

Even if the user is “in” the server to view another voice chat text would be better then nothing.

This is driving users to switch to other “Chat Services” like group chats in steam, whatsapp and signal and just use voice.

i get this is a voicechat program first and foremost… and i dont care one bit for that excuse.

ultimately any chat system - voice or text - exists to facilitate smooth communication.

its a stupidly fundamental feature and the lack of it is causing problems.

Is there any word on or thoughts into adding a ‘permanent’ option to chats to allow them to be set so that anyone coming in to the chat can read what was posted while they were not there? If there is one already, could some one post me how to set it up. Many thanks.

Hey guys and gals, long time no see.

tl;dr:

Please add text Channels <3

So… I’m returning to Teamspeak!
Yay, never thought I would say that again. But I just have to say my opinion and I hope you can understand.

This is your chance to get a whole lot of Users back. Discord kinda shot its own foot and you could really capitalise on it. The only thing you really need to do is add a second kind of Channel.

Text Channels.

Hear me out:

I run a community of around 100 people. We are mostly concerned with nerd stuff. Our Discord is called “Nerd Corner”. Imagine 100 dudes and dudettes casually hanging around and sharing different types of content and ideas. Some are more into Robotics, some are more into make culture and others are more into knitting. Anything Nerdy goes. Most of the times we chat, but sometimes we need a Voice-Channel to talk to each other.

The core concept of the community is to have a place where like-minded people share Nerdy stuff.

And now Discord wants Facial Recognition.

I want to give my users a valid alternative. So I’m going to migrate my users over to Teamspeak. I grew up with Teamspeak, used it the first time I was, I don’t know, like 10? So this is a nice thing for me. I love you guys and the work you do.

But we really need the Text channels.

I know where you coming from. I read the Arguments in other posts like

”Teamspeak is not Discord”
”This way you can see who is reading the text or not”
”Privacy Policy”

I get it, I really do.
But I think the right solution is this: We really can have both I think.

If you only want people who are in the Voice channels to read your text, write there
If you want everybody to know about it, use a global text channel.

Make it the special purpose of those text channels to be global.
Everybody knows how these Should work, this would combine best of both worlds.

Trust me guys, this will bring you back a whole ton of users.
I’m back and will be staying because of your Privacy Policies. Discord ■■■■■■ up. And I guess I won’t be the only one returning. Use this opportunity and give these users a Feature they are Familiar with. And in most cases, actually need to migrate their community over to Teamspeak

Do it like discord did. Capitalise first, monetise later. I hosted my Ts6 Server today, because i read the news about Discord. You provided really nice docker compose files, i just put that on my server and it works. Friction free.

this is really great keep that going.

Keep it free for 32 slot servers, make Licenses for bigger ones. Add Global Text Channels for community Organisation and Discourse, reclaim the market, show Discord who’s the boss.

And then get creative about making money. Add Badges and Flairs. I really would love to give you some money just to have a nice “Support” badge. Doesn’t need to be fancy in any way.

One Badge behind the name “Supporter” and make it like 3 colours (I would suggest green, blue, and pink  ) and sell those for 5-10-15 a month.

I really think this could be your moment to shine and bring Online-Gaming and Online-Communities back to the good old “User entered your channel” days.
And keep it that way.

Those are my two cents about this. Take it or leave it, I wont be mad. I’m here to stay.

Love ya’ll

P.S.
Thanks for the Childhood I had back in the TS2 Days. You guys established modern Online-Gaming and communities and I’ll be forever grateful for the times I spent with my friends in Teamspeak.

Best Regards
Eddie

Also wanted to throw my hat in the ring per se, got a TS6 server running on my home-hosted Ubuntu server. Not having separate text channels is a big friction point and as mentioned by other users this would be a great chance to recapture some market share!

Joining the group of “please add this”! After so many years and it just feels nice to be back.

But same feeling as many others, we REALLY need the persistent text only chats for this to work. Even if for a while users still have to be connected to the server in an idle/afk voice channel. i hope that doesnt stay the case, but i do understand thats the underlying architecture of TS.

If this does get implemented I do hope the text channels are stored on the host, not the cloud. this should be advantageous to both sides anyways, teamspeak-com does not need to worry about space and user privacy. While admins get to know they have a secure and under control home for their group thats not going to up and ask for their IDs out of the blue…

Hey there! Are there any plans to introduce point 2 (permanent chat channels)?

There is already a primary thread for this feature, though no official response after the recent Discord news.

To the people saying “well that feature is not how TS works” etc…You need to understand that Teamspeak has no real future without it. It will never compete without it. It isn’t about what “you” want feature wise. It is about what the larger community wants and the larger community wants text channels without it being tied to voice channels. This is a non-starter for Teamspeak to be a Discord replacement without it for the overwhelming majority of the Discord community.

Technically ts6 already has that, it’s called group chats, but they are very bad at the moment. The search is barely functional, chat history is slow to load, no way to view attachments, no URL previews and no mobile app.

They need to fix these problems and then they could tie group chats and voice servers together. That way you can read the group chat at any moment, from any device, without the need to be constantly online, and then if you want to voice chat you just connect to the linked server

Discord has text only channels in addition to voice channels. Can we see future development of text only channels as well?

It would be nice to have users post to text channels on different topics of text channels setup on the server without having to switch to it as a voice channel.

Thanks!

You linked to this thread… This is the MAIN thread…

Im joining in to say that seperate text channels and the ability to NOT be connected to a voice channel at all times is two problems Teamspeak needs to solve before its suitable for a viable alternative to DC. Personally have almost no issues with this but a few (not as tech savvy) friends have huge problems with this. Having an AFK channel and needing to connect to a voice channel to read/write messages is a big no. They feel very watched.

I also get that group chats exist where you don’t need to be connected to a voice chat to read/write messages. Having this functionallity in servers would be great! As a programmer myself (what I do for work) I will make a Discordify plugin as soon as plugin support gets added to TS6.

I don’t only have bad things to say about TS6, mainly good things actually, for example…

  • You can screen share multiple things at the same time…. This blew us away!!
  • Also we olve that you can change backgorund on channels to make game specific channels!

Honestly myself love TS6 and is happy to move over, but getting my friends to switch will take time… Where seperate text channels and the need to ALWAYS be in a voice chat is the two main points.

That comment was from a different thread that was merged into this one. Thanks though.

I found similar posts (not as popular/old as this one though) over a similar topic.

I shared my sentiment there as well but ill drop my 2 cents here too.

As someone who could probably be considered a Discord shut-in and homelabber, I’ve spent the last week testing and self-hosting several alternatives in parallel with a few other like-minded friends. Fluxer, STOAT/Revolt, Matrix, Spacebar, Gamevox, Guilded, and even Nextcloud Talk.

Here’s the honest takeaway:

TeamSpeak is still unmatched in voice. The P2P streaming efficiency, audio quality, and overall performance are incredible. The fact that the server is a simple single-container deployment is also a massive advantage compared to the complexity of alternatives like Matrix or STOAT.

But the biggest blocker right now is chat.

Modern communities don’t separate voice and chat anymore. Persistent, global text channels are not optional. they are the backbone of how communities function. People need to be able to stay connected, read, lurk, and participate asynchronously without being tied to a voice channel.

Fluxer, for example, already understands this. It’s chat-first and feels much closer to a true Discord replacement in terms of communication flow, but it lacks the maturity, stability, and polish that TeamSpeak already has.

Right now, TeamSpeak has the superior foundation. If TS6 fully embraces persistent, Discord-style text channels and improves the chat experience to match its voice capabilities, it would immediately become the strongest and most viable Discord alternative.

This is basically the number one reason I cannot recommend TeamSpeak to my friends right now. I have poked around on the app, self-hosted a server, and noticed this issue. At first, I thought that I couldn’t find the right button to leave the voice channel or that the UI/UX was weird, but it simply is not possible to text chat without joining that same voice chat channel. It took me a while to understand that both are linked.

You NEED the possibility to create text-only channels if you want to have a bigger customer base, it’s an expected feature these days. Otherwise, people will poke around for a few minutes, say “huh, that’s neat” and never come back again.

Well, its really must have, im waiting for it for years
Text channels should be slot-free, so everyone can read them, voice channels should stay like they are now. In the future web version and mobile app, thats all to make it great  and good business model so they can earn profit
