As a new user who never used TeamSpeak until the big TS6 update, I have to say my first impressions were quite positive. The recent marketing has made many jabs at Discord, and I can see why. If TeamSpeak’s social media can make jabs about Discord and want users to switch from Discord to TeamSpeak, I feel like some updates might have to be somewhat similar to how Discord operates. Think of it like how Bluesky is very similar to Twitter/X, but not a direct clone.
Feature Ideas
Profile Information: When you click on someone’s avatar picture, it just shows a picture, which takes up too much space for what it offers. A giant window pops up showing the picture and a thing at the bottom saying PNG, which feels a bit useless. It would be more useful to have detailed profile information similar to Discord.
Notification Sounds: While the classic notification sounds are nostalgic for many, the voice saying “error” or “connected” feels dated. A simple sound effect could be more modern and less intrusive, the voice notifications sounds are similar to those found in old Bluetooth headphones.
Starring GIFs: Adding a feature to star or favorite GIFs for easy reuse would be convenient, so users don’t have to search for them every time.
Statuses: Make the statuses more similar to Discord and/or Instagram. To the best of my knowledge, they aren’t as clear as something like notes on Instagram or how they work on Discord.
I don’t want TeamSpeak to become a clone of Discord, but I do think the UI could be simplified in some ways. However, I understand that most long-time users would prefer the UI to stay true to the TeamSpeak way rather than be overly simplified. The great thing about TeamSpeak is that it allows for customization. If someone wants a UI more aligned with Discord, they can easily find or create a theme for it. Unlike Discord, where you need a third-party client (which could get you banned) or pay monthly for customization, TeamSpeak offers this flexibility out of the box.
I know I might bring up Discord a lot, but if TeamSpeak takes jabs and tries to bring new people to TeamSpeak, they should maybe make some things similar. I’m not saying they should just copy the UI 1:1, but some things, like adding favorites to GIFs or making the status more similar or just possibly even adding a profile with a description and things of that nature.
