Mandatory voice seems limiting

Been trying out the self-hosted beta. Basic voice functionality seems fine, and the chat functions seem to work well enough. However, I’m curious why server connections must be over voice. There doesn’t seem to be a chat-only channel option AFAICT. I can see a group chat option that seems to indicate it’s specific to a server, but if there’s a way to create a group chat on a particular server I haven’t found it.

TS6 seems to aim to compete with Discord, which acts as a general chat service first, with voice channels added in alongside. You can look at the chat without joining any voice channels. It would be a lot more competitive to at least match that basic functionality and let server connections “step up” to voice channels. I think it would transform TS6 into a viable alternative for groups that want to be able to host their own communities without directly requiring a huge platform.

The service is still in beta, so I’m curious: are there plans to enable functionality along these lines?

I would also like to have that feature implemented. Sometimes I want to see who is online or what friends are doing, and then decide whether I want to join. Would be great if that was possible without having to actually join a voice channel for that.
