My friend has an NPL license, the server has been running with it for years.
A month ago, the license was automatically renewed, the date was also changed in it. However, he is unable to start his server now because he writes that it has expired, even though it seems to have been renewed. What to do then?
If it says it is expired then it wasn’t renewed.

That license was revoked after breaking the agreement more than once.
My friend did not receive an email! My friend has no warning, no threat. But on what basis was it taken? What are you talking about? I don’t get an explanation for that.
A license mostly gets revoked when they violate the guidelines of this license model/type. We’re basically talking about the Non-Profit agreement. You (or your friend) need to get in touch with the sales support about this matter — after this process, you may can receive some more informations. But currently, I’m not sure if this license is ever going to get renewed once more.

Your friend was never allowed to give out that license to anyone else. That’s also not allowed.
As MCG wrote you need to contact the Sales department to get support for this. I can only tell you what i got from Sales and i won’t give out details here in public.
