With the latest Discord fiasco, I don’t think most users are looking for a simple voice chat replacement. If they were, ts3 would be plenty enough. People are also looking for persistent group chats that they can access anywhere on the fly, and ts6 seems to want to capture that audience, but it falls shortly. Everything I’m about to say is about group chats
First of all, no mobile client and no work on it from the looks of it. You can’t compete with Discord without it.
Search in group chats is not good:
it’s not chronologically ordered for some awful reason
there isn’t an obvious way to search for attachments. You can search for “sender:” but it doesn’t teach you if there are other tags to search
it’s only searching whatever is cached on your machine and you have to keep loading (slowly) if you need to find anything. And on that note…
How long are the messages stored for? It seems like you can keep loading them from the cloud, but overall experience makes it feel like they will get deleted after some time like they are on Steam
No URL previews. Are there any plans to add them? It is very convenient to share a YouTube video or an X post and view it right inside the chat. Discord and Telegram are good examples of that.
Streaming. It looks like it’s supposed to be good, I haven’t tested it with someone else yet. But it’s missing a key feature for me - side by side chat beside the stream in fullscreen. I want to watch the stream with as much of my screen dedicated to it and still see the chat.
I think that’s most of my concerns. You can say that I’m asking too much or that TeamSpeak isn’t targeting that kind of a user base, but if so, I don’t understand the point of developing ts6 with group chats then. Apologies if I might come off as condescending, but it’s just depressing how there are no feature complete alternatives to Discord
as a person wanting to leave discord, i have similar thoughts in regards to the server system.
i think the biggest issue with teamspeak is that basically everything is clientside even when it really shouldnt be, you cant just go to your server and post
“hey XXdeath-knightXX and bloodwolfslayer27 i died earlier today, when you guys get online tonight can i have some of your gold?“
because they simply will not get that message which absolutely murders any attempt to build a real community on this platform.
you cant reply to specific messages to avoid confusion, like you can on discord
you cant see posts that were made while you were sleeping, like you can on discord
you cant talk in channel-1 while texting with people in channel-2, like you can on discord
you cant even have a server admin delete a particularly rancid post, like you can on discord
as much as i’d like to get off of discord this is at best a borderline impossible sell to my dnd group.
its both saddening and infuriating to come back to the platform after a decade and find out that seemingly no attention was put into features that are so incredibly fundamental to chat programs.
Everything you mentioned is already there in the Group Chat and Contact Chat
Reply function on messages
Offline messages (persistent messages while your friends are offline)
Admins can moderate Group Chats
But I think you’re talking about pure channel chat on a TeamSpeak server and yes, we are aware of that and it’s also on our todo.
So we completely agree that we need persistent chat on TS servers again. (Like we did before)
Hi, I’m also part of a group that wants to move away from Discord. I want to start by thanking you guys for bringing streaming to TeamSpeak. it’s nice to be back home. This feature was actually what made our clan switch from TeamSpeak to Discord many years ago. When it works, streaming on TeamSpeak is amazing. We would love to have it running over the server eventually, but for now P2P is fine, but server side would help those of us with less upload bandwidth. My screen setup is also really thankful for the stream popout feature and the option to drag and drop and rearrange streams inside it.
Maybe we are configured wrong, but we don’t have URL previews in our group chat. We only get a gray box with error code 153. Maybe it is also a Germany thing blocking it. Even just a cover image for videos would already be nice .
So far our biggest issue is the missing phone app. We don’t even need full voice support yet, but we would really appreciate being able to use our group chats on the go to share memes and pictures. atm we still use discord for that -_- so any alpha or beta version would be nice. We also didn’t know that attachments get deleted after 30 days, but I understand that storage space is expensive. Maybe self hosted group chats are planned at some point, maybe including a migration? We would totally be willing to carry the weight of our own memes and files.
also now that i hear it a Media View like in whatsapp would be nice. i used it a few times there and it was helpful.
In regards to streams, I wasn’t talking about a popout window or fullscreen.
I’m talking about fullscreen “mode” where part of it gets occupied by chat and the video fills the rest of the screen with no other UI elements, no taskbar, no window decoration, just like you would expect from fullscreen. Like what they have on YouTube streams and in Discord calls:
Ideally the background should also be either pitch black or configurable, like in the examples above.
And preferably this indicator in the corner should not be displaying all the time:
