TeamSpeak iOS app pricing and competitiveness

Hello TeamSpeak team,

I am currently looking for an alternative to Discord following recent policy changes requiring identity verification. As part of this transition, I deployed a self-hosted TeamSpeak server on my own infrastructure and started evaluating your ecosystem.

When I tried to install the iOS app, I discovered that it is paid. This is a major barrier to adoption, especially for new users migrating from platforms where mobile apps are free and fully supported.

If TeamSpeak aims to be a serious competitor to Discord and similar platforms, the mobile experience is critical. The current model, paid access to the iOS app and an interface that feels dated compared to modern standards, makes large-scale adoption more difficult, even for technically inclined users willing to self-host.

A modern, actively maintained, and free mobile application would significantly improve adoption and make migrations like mine much easier. Many users are actively looking for privacy-respecting, self-hosted communication solutions, and TeamSpeak is well positioned to fill that role, but the entry barrier on mobile needs to be reconsidered.

Thank you for taking this feedback into account.

It‘s 1$. I think pricing is okay. 1 out of 10 was not willing to pay for it.

Also the advantage is the less power consumption compared to other voip apps. The client is retro but functional.

I get your point, and I agree that 1$ is not expensive from an individual user perspective.

My concern is more about adoption at scale, especially for communities migrating from Discord. In communication platforms, even small friction at installation can significantly slow down onboarding, particularly on mobile where users expect free access by default.

For existing TeamSpeak users this probably isn’t an issue. But for new communities evaluating alternatives, the combination of a paid mobile app and a less modern UX makes migration harder than it should be.

TeamSpeak has strong technical foundations and great efficiency compared to other VoIP apps. That’s exactly why I think lowering the mobile entry barrier could make a big difference in helping it grow again.
