where do I find documentation to customize my own theme?

There is no documentation…
Somewhere around here is a thread explaining the basics. But you will have to do a lot of probing, trial and error and a have to deal with a lot of weird side effects caused by the searingly random usage of css classes.
I recommend looking at other existing themes to get some idea how you can achieve certain things.
When you want to package the theme there actually is documentation. I think you have to click on the I icon in the settings next to user themes.
