I can delete messages from the other person of a private chat and he can delete my messages.

That’s not a bug.
In direct rooms anyone is admin. This is a desired behavior for these chats with contacts.

I think it would be better if you could only delete your own messages in private chat. But you are the professionals! Thanks for the answer.
With the matrix protocol we had following options:
Nobody can delete anything.
All can delete anything.
One person can delete anything.
We decided that this is the less worst way to solve it.
Sure we could have added permission management for direct chats but that would be overkill.
