TS6 Server BETA - v6.0.0-beta6 | License Extension, Supporting Veterans, Licensing Issues, Licensing and Pricing

 Hey Everyone!

We want to share some important updates on the TeamSpeak 6 Server Beta and explain a few of the areas we are focusing on right now. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to leave feedback so far. Whether it has been positive, critical, or somewhere in between, it helps us a lot.

:hourglass_flowing_sand: License Duration Extended

First, the 32-Slot Beta License has been extended and will now be valid until November 1, 2025, giving everyone enough time to continue testing and exploring. During the Beta, we believe renewing the license every two months is the best way to keep things organized and ensure everyone stays on the latest version.

To use the updated license and server, visit the GitHub Release here: v6.0.0-beta6

:handshake: Supporting Veterans / TeamSpeak OGs

TeamSpeak has been around for a long time (we’re getting old…), and we know it’s our veteran users and long-time communities who helped build it into what it is today. Your support over the years has kept the platform alive and growing, and we want to properly recognize that.

With the release of the TeamSpeak 6 Server, we are planning to give something back. A big part of this will focus on licensing, where we are working on ways to offer special treatment for veteran users and long-time license holders. This might include special licenses, discounts, loyalty rewards, early access to new features, or other perks that reflect your long-term support.

Nothing is finalized yet, but we want you to know that the people who have supported TeamSpeak for many years will be at the top of the list when it comes to receiving something in return.

:pirate_flag: Addressing Licensing Issues

Another important topic that we need to address is licensing issues within the TeamSpeak ecosystem. As many of you know, anyone has been able to download the TeamSpeak Server from our website, self-host it, and run a 32-Slot Free Server, without any form of registration or providing any information to us. These servers are completely anonymous, and in most cases, we have no visibility of their existence.

While this level of freedom and anonymity made it easy for people to set up their own servers, it also led to a situation where TeamSpeak Servers could be operated on a large scale without proper licensing or any support for the platform. This is not sustainable in the long term, and with the TeamSpeak 6 Server, we are working to change that.

To gain a clearer understanding of how the default license is being used and to take initial steps toward preventing misuse, the TeamSpeak 6 Server now includes a built-in reporting mechanism for instances running with the default license. This reporting is shared exclusively with TeamSpeak and is never shared with any third parties.

The reporting includes the following data: the server’s IP address, the configured and used slot count, the virtual server ID (vserver ID), and the TeamSpeak Server version in use. These insights enable us to better assess actual usage patterns, address potential abuse early, and guide future improvements to the product. At this stage, reporting is optional, but in the future, it will become part of the standard setup, so we can keep supporting the community with the highest quality of service.

Proper licensing will help ensure that server usage is legitimate and sustainable, while still protecting your privacy and giving you full control over your own server environment. The goal is not to make things harder for users, but to protect the long-term future of TeamSpeak.

We will share more about how we plan to improve the licensing system in future announcements.

:label: Licensing and Pricing Still in Progress

The exact licensing model, pricing, and distribution for the TeamSpeak 6 Server are still being worked on. Beta Testing is helping us better understand what is needed and where we can and should improve. As mentioned earlier, we will share more information in upcoming announcements as we continue to work on this.

Thank you for all your feedback and ongoing support! :blue_heart:

Even after changes to license prices we can still expect self host license(32 slots) to be free with this new reporting mechanism?

Thank you for the clearer communication and updates on TS6. However, it’s still a little disappointing that some key points remain unclear. In particular, will the default 32-slot license continue to be free after the beta period, or should we expect changes?

Finally a good move to do for users.

There is one big problem which you will not be able to address, TS3 offered true free licenses for the community with 512 slots and servers.

No discounts. No loyalty rewards. No fancy nonsense.

Your whole post is about tracking server owners, restricting usage and prices in general.

Iā€˜m one of those ā€žfirst day team speak self hostersā€œ, never made a single penny with it. I lost the license once due to that the server was not renewed, and received no help anymore for it, nothing, like all other ā€ž veteran users and long-time license holdersā€œ which you mentioned and may run in the same problem.

How would you like to offer something for your old users if you do not even support them anymore in any terms in regards of licensing?

The NPL is outdatet and need to be Removed!

Why do you reject other users claim of their NPL or are interested in the use of their license(s)?
That should only be a concern of TeamSpeak and the respective license holders.

For example I wouldn’t and will not buy a non-perpetual license. If the day comes I will most likely switch to an alternative solution if there is no applicable offer or my current license gets rejected.

Is there a way to copy my TeamSpeak 3 database to TeamSpeak 6?

Last time I checked (beta5), no. The uuids changed from sha1 to sha256 and so far the server had no ad-hoc migration logic, at least I didn’t find anything related to that. Meaning even if you convert your database to the new format all the client uuids have to be manually updated.

I have questions related to client / server.

  • My Non-Profit license after 10+ years expired a few days ago due using TeamSpeak 6 server on my home server (only one can run at the same time), I was testing and using TeamSpeak 6 due screenshare functions. I have no problems proving that I’m owner and I actively used this license for past x years, will be I able to apply as OG member (I’ve been using TS since 2006)?
  • Is there any active development for Peer to Server video / screenshare?
  • Will be attachment limit (5MB fixed) and will our server host all chat and media files?
  • Is there any active development of new mobile app or is it only in plans?

Answers would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Exactly, that is what I meant. Most users who have an NPL think the same way, and in my opinion a company does not really need people like that.

@Plenet_OTAKU Why are you so strongly against something that supported the TeamSpeak community for years, especially during a time when there was complete silence from TeamSpeak itself and licenses could only be purchased through ATHP providers at a much higher cost? Did you perhaps lose your own license and now want to punish other NPL users?

I really don’t understand why anyone would be against the NPL license if it’s being used correctly. Also, it’s not even possible to ā€œparkā€ an NPL license it automatically expires if it’s not used, and you’re required to maintain a functioning website in line with the NPL policy.

So please, explain to me in more detail why you think these licenses should be removed but from the perspective of a user, not as a TeamSpeak employee or owner focused on monetization.

Majority of your questions I can reply as… ā€œUpdates are very slow so it takes time to actually release an update for it it, but everything is still in developmentā€.

The mobile thing is not confirmed, but again small Team, or did you forget? So one thing at the time.

About the 5MB file share… Are you really giving them ideas how to restrict people even more? Pls, on the next beta update probably they will release an update where you can’t use advanced permissions anymore unless if you have a license for it…

Well, I own an old TS3 server still to this day and this ā€œSupport for the og usersā€ I don’t think that’s going to be convincing enough on top of all changes that TS6 have been making.

It seems nobody cares about the surveillance besides me for the free version of the server. It’s not really clear so, free version will be tracked and if you have a license it will not? Please clarify this a bit more… But this is a bad sign already… especially the whole censorship thing that’s happening in the entire world at this point. I know TeamSpeak is trying to be sustainable, make money and at same time not piss off their users, but I was reading about that and I was thinking with myself "Man, a recipe for disaster, first they convince people it’s okay to the server be monitored and then in some years later they will shutdown the same servers because ā€œillegal activity reportsā€, you know what I mean? This surveillance change I think it’s for more control in how your server operates and if something bad happens and call attention to politicians they have a way to shut down anytime… It’s not really different in what’s going on UK for example…

I’m using TeamSpeak since the times of Teamspeak 2 and a bit of Teamspeak Classic, so honestly, for the ā€œOG peopleā€ out there, I don’t think they are going to migrate to TS6 anytime soon, I’m sorry to say that… I was on TS6 since beginning of this year and for financial reasons, even I’ll go back to TS3… I think this is when the old version is so much better than the newer version for some reason… I wonder why, can devs figure it out why TS3 is still so popular between OG users?

I think a way to say thank you for supporting Teamspeak after all these years would be somehow reviving old licenses or make it a come back for short period of time, that would be amazing and would show appreciation for the users. Now there are multiple reasons why they wouldn’t do something like this unfortunate, but if somehow they can afford it it would be awesome… One thing, I mean people behind Teamspeak 6 decisions never going to understand is… OG users never going to migrate to TS6, even after beta, even after it gets very good with the whole screenshare thing, I don’t think they are going to migrate… It’s not me saying, it’s what everyone thinks… I want an OG user to come to this post and say how wrong I am about it, pretty sure it will be minority tho…

About the 32 slot thing, you trapped yourself in this… if you change that YOU WILL LOSE USERS, if you leave as it is, IT’S NOT SUSTAINABLE, what a rabbit hole huh you got trapped on… I guess now the decision will be hostage to your own users. I mean since there’s no balance in being sustainable and pissing off users then better losing A BUNCH of users than money right? Again 100% sure most people don’t use 32 slots, but offering an option for licensing 500 or something, would be nice since some these people I assume are influencers and it can bring massive quantity of people to their servers, with the 32 limit slot for free, it’s not even sustainable for them.

In conclusion, I see Teamspeak as a company thinking to what’s good for them TODAY, but not actually thinking for their users for TOMORROW. I could be wrong, but the impression I have with all of that is a desperate move to still be relevant and financially well for a long run. And that’s why they are caring that much for SUSTAINABILITY today, but 10 years ago they didn’t care.

  1. I have never owned an NPL myself because I make money with my projects and other work.
  2. It is possible to ā€œparkā€ an NPL. You just need to host a TS3 server with the license and then it will not expire. At the start of the new year (01.01.20XX) it automatically renews for another 365 days. Nobody from the TeamSpeak team actually checks whether the website still exists, unless someone specifically reports you.
  3. Why I am against it: mainly because there is already a Sponsorship License. People should simply apply for that, go through the validation process, and if it is denied then too bad.

I know many other server owners who just park their NPLs. Some of them even have an AAL (Gamer License) on top of the parked NPL. And in general, for small private groups with fewer than 10 users, there is absolutely no need to still have an NPL. If they have not even reached 32 users in 2 years, then they can simply run a ā€œNo Licenseā€ server.

There are more reasons, but I will leave it at that for now. None of this comes from jealousy that others get 512 slots + 10 virtual servers for free. I never used the NPL myself anyway, because I would always violate the requirements needed for an NPL.

And yes, I know that TeamSpeak should also check their Sponsorship licenses more often, because some people who have them do not even use them properly. TeamSpeak should actively verify that. That is why I welcome the license metadata tracking system. I hope it will be applied to all license models, not just the Free model.

And yes, it is fine that getting a Sponsorship license is harder than getting an NPL.

My view of whole situation is that things are moving too slowly, focusing at this point of licensing is pointless. First there is needed to deliver features and improvements that similar programs offer.

I understand that they need licenses to survive and make TeamSpeak better in the future, but I would never pay for half developed program with tons of disadvantages. If I compare TS3 and TS6 server there is not any big improvements, only screenshare which is P2P.

Things are going really too slowly, people won’t spend money on program which has bad development history and from BETA 2 to BETA 3 is gap more than half year, this is not normal at all. You can’t take money if you don’t deliver product is it should be.

Mobile app is nowadays must standard and can’t be ignored, management needs to realize if they want this app to be good, they need to hire more devs, 2-3 guys can’t make miracles, that’s totally normal and it’s not fault of employees which are working on project now.

I’m sure many many people would come back to TeamSpeak but at this point there is not any big reasons to switch.

Great beta so far! There’s no mention of the 32-license limit, and everyone seems upset about it. Relax, I don’t expect TeamSpeak to act ā€˜unfairly’.

Here’s some feedback from me. I think the new client is pretty good. However, I also think there’s still a lot of work to be done. Screenshare still isn’t hardware accelerated. The Mac client still can’t use streams. There’s still no mobile app that comes close to Discord.

In this day and age, it’s really a must-have. The price for a community is okay, so you can’t complain. Self-hosting is also good.

But you really need to speed up development. I like the style of Teamspeak 6. Everything looks sleek and modern. But now it’s time for new features. I don’t know how big your development team is, but everything seems to be moving very slowly.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the next big steps will be taken quickly.

The server will not start if the FILE Manger port is changed. It will display the error reason: Cannot assign requested address
teamspeak-server exited with code 1

  • I start the server via Docker-compose
